The painting is mostly it's soft edges, but she is done with pen-and-wash, so that she stands out. The divider lines, of the road,are pen-and-wash as well, to draw your eye in, and a nice tunnel effect from the trees, and your eye goes straight to the horizon line, which isn't well defined, thus the feeling of an unknown future.
I may look stupid, but I know a trick or two.
No wife... no kids... you reach a certain age, and you start to wonder what impact you had on the world, what legacy you're leaving behind. I'm leaving these paintings behind... If a hundred years after I'm dead, someone sees something they like, that's good enough for me.
