There's not much to say about a man tossing a hat in the air, but for some reason, I like it.
The contrast between the edges of the man done in line-and-wash style, and his backpack and hat done with soft edges makes for a nice bit of complexity. Add in the splatters that make their own outlines, as they dry, and it's pretty cool. ....not to mention the soft blended edgeless background.
I love the implied hangtime of the hat amplified by the arching of the splatters, implying their own hangtimes. To quote another artist (spatters are serious things)
So yeah, it may seem simple, but don't think for a minute that I didn't give it some thought.
No wife... no kids... you reach a certain age, and you start to wonder what impact you had on the world, what legacy you're leaving behind. I'm leaving these paintings behind... If a hundred years after I'm dead, someone sees something they like, that's good enough for me.
